The Argan tree is believed to have originated in a village named Argana, which lay to the north east of the Moroccan city of Agadir. The Argan tree grows wild in the south-western region of Morocco, where these trees laden with fleshy fruits are the favorite target of native goats. Argan oil is a plant oil produced from the kemels of that argan tree and the Moroccans used to dip in at breakfast or to drizzle on couscous or pasta. It is also used for cosmetic purposes. Otherwise this story would be on a culinary blog.
Moroccans have been using Argan oil as a skin moisturizer and hair conditioner since ancient times. Phoenicians in as early as 1550 B.C. have recorded the use of Argan Oil by locals to heal and beautify their bodies. In 1510 African explorer Leo Africanus came across the Argan Oil when he was traveling across Morocco. From there, the oil entered Europe where only the rich and wealthy class had access to this expensive, rare and exotic oil.
Today, even after 3,500 years, the Berber women of Southern Morocco are known for their exotic beauty. And their secret is applying this precious golden oil regularly to their faces, nails, hair and body.
Often called ‘liquid gold’, argan oil is extremely rich in beneficial nutrients including fatty acids and vitamin E. Its properties make it particularly beneficial for the hair and skin, which makes it a popular cosmetic choice for many celebrities. It’s not just for the rich and famous, though – anyone can reap the argan oil benefits for their body.
Argan oil is most commonly used as a skin moisturiser to hydrate and soften skin, the ideal product to give skin a natural boost. It absorbs easily and is non-greasy and non-irritating, which makes it a great natural moisturiser. Not only does argan oil act as an effective moisturiser, it can also give skin a youthful glow and reduce the visibility of wrinkles. Its anti-oxidant effect makes argan oil the ideal anti-aging product. It restores elasticity and leaves skin feeling plumper and softer. The vitamin E and fatty acids in argan oil are excellent for repairing damaged skin and providing it with nutrients which will prevent further dryness and irritation. Argan oil also contains ingredients which soothe skin.
